Thieves storm police station, steal guns then replace them with toy guns (photo)

A gang of thieves broke into a police armoury and stole 42 powerful rifles then replaced them with toys. The incident reportedly happened in Paraguay.

Police officers in Paraguay discovered the FN FAL battle rifles had been replaced with wooden and plastic replicas during an inspection, in what has been dubbed the most embarrassing scandal in the country's police force.

According to Metro.Uk, the inspection was ordered after the rifles started appearing on the black market last year.

The stolen rifles, which can sell for up to $10,000 were being kept in storage in the armoury in the city of Capiata while the police force were replacing them with newer models. Some of the guns are believed to have ended up in Argentina whiles others were allegedly smuggled into Brazil.

Brazil has complained for years that many of the illegal weapons being seized in the country come from Paraguay. Photos of the toy replicas were shared and made public by Paraguayan media. The officer in charger of the armoury has since been replaced but arrests have been made so far.
