Oscar Pistorius jailed for murdering his girlfriend has his sentence doubled from 6 to 13 years

Oscar Pistorius, who was jailed for murdering his girlfriend has today had his sentence doubled from 6years to 13 years after an Appellate court ruled that the initial 6 year sentence handed him was too lenient.

Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine's day in 2013. He fired at her four times through his toilet door while Reeva was holed up in his toilet.

The Paralympian, will now be moved from the rehabilitation facility he was enjoying himself in, to the maximum prison where he first served for one year. He once claimed he feared for his life during his stay at the prison which is dominated by violent gangs.

In the ruling, the appeal court said Pistorius failed to be frank at his trial and didn't show genuine remorse for killing his lover.

I find it difficult on the evidence to accept that the respondent is genuinely remorseful.  The respondent has failed to explain why he fired the fatal shots, .. to my mind, the attempt by the respondent to apologise to the deceased’s family does not demonstrate any genuine remorse on his part.
He failed to take the court fully into his confidence despite having an opportunity to do so during the second sentencing proceedings. It is clear herefrom that the respondent is unable to appreciate the crime he has committed. ‘
The senior judge found there ‘are no substantial or compelling circumstances which can justify the departure from the prescribed minimum sentence, Judge Sereti said.
