Groundnut Seller Rapes Four-Year-Old Girl In Lagos


For allegedly defiling a four-year-old girl, a groundnut seller, 21-year-old Sunday Uche, was on Monday released on N500, 000 bail on the orders of a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Ipaye Nwachukwu, in her ruling, also granted the accused two sureties in like sum. ‎
One of the sureties must be a civil servant of not less than Grade Level 14, while the other surety must be a community leader or a cleric with an evidence of tax payment to the government, she said.
She ordered the sureties to deposit N100,000 with the court’s registrar as part of the bail condition. ‎
Uche, a resident of No. 57, Olowolagba St., Iwaya in Yaba area of Lagos, is arraigned for child defilement to which he pleaded not guilty.
‎Earlier, Police Prosecutor Anthonia Osayande told the court that ‎ the accused committed the offence at No. 57, Olowolagba St., Iwaya at about 2.50 p.m. on Feb. 2.
‎Osayande said the accused, who lives in the same compound with the parents of the girl, was at home in the afternoon on the fateful day to commit the crime.
He said, “The girl has been going to the accused’s room for groundnut which he always keeps for her.
“As she went to knock on his door, the accused opened the door for her and defiled her.
“When the mother wanted to wash her pant, she discovered blood stains.
“Following the mother’s interrogation, the minor confessed that the accused had defiled her.”
‎The offence contravened sections 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.
The section provides life imprisonment for offenders on conviction. ‎
‎April 4 has been fixed for hearing of the case.
